MSN UK has a nice little run down of the "demise" of the joystick over time.  I guess the author doesn't really know about the increased following of retro gamers who are buying and building their own controllers to interface with new gaming systems to get that old school feeling back again.

I mean, honestly, there's just nothing like playing a round of Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter on a good old fashioned joystick with the right amount of properly arranged buttons.

You just can't pull off Ryu's super move properly on a gamepad, nor is it as elegant to here Scorpion yell "Get Over Here!" when you've completed the move via a gamepad.
