Wii Shop At It Again
Nick Greeley, Wednesday, 26 September 2007

WiiShopJust yesterday we reported to you several new games that Nintendo has ported over to the popular Wii Shop Channel.

Today, we get more news that Kirby's Avalanche, Streets of Rage 3 and LEGEND OF HERO TONMA have all been ported as well.

Kirby's Avalanche for Super NES features 1-2 players and is a break from everyone's favorite little pink hero taking a bite out of his enemies and instead jumping in to the puzzle world.

Streets of Rage 3, originally for Sega Genesis, is back and the Syndicate is still on the loose tormenting the city once again.

And finally, Legend of Hero Tonma, a little known Turbografx16 title, is an action game that puts players in control of the magic-user Tonma, whose role - as was typical for game heroes of the day - is to travel to another world and save the princess.

So hop on over to the Wii Shop and Game On!

King Of Kong Opens In Theaters
Nick Greeley, Tuesday, 25 September 2007

KingOfKong It's probably no surprise to most of you avid gamers, so let this serve as a reminder that The King Of Kong, A Fistful of Quarters opened in limited theaters on August 17th, 2007.

In summary: The movie follows the stories of two very different people — a middle school science teacher named Steve Wiebe and an entrepreneur named Billy Mitchell — with one thing in common: kicking booty at the original arcade version of Donkey Kong.

With a slot in the Guinness Book of World Records on the line, the two fight it out for DK domination, all the way to a dramatic ending in which one is crowned king.

And be sure to check out the recent interviews done by Retroblast! Contributor Mitch Gearson in the recent and previous issues of GameRoom Magazine.

Space Invaders Goes Extreme
Nick Greeley, Tuesday, 25 September 2007

SIExtreme RyanDG over at Arcade Rennaisance has a story about Famitsu planning to release Space Invaders for the DS. From some of the screenshots it's very apparent, as RyanDG mentions, that Famitsu is not content to just give us just plain old Space Invaders for the 30th anniversary.

Wait, did I just say 30th Anniversary? Has it really been 30 years???

Yes, yes it has been.  Will this be as big a hit as the recently updated Pac-Man that we saw on Xbox Live?  Hard to tell, but it does look interesting to say the least.

One thing is for sure.  As time passes, we're starting to see a lot of revival for our favorites that many thought had fallen away into Arcade Neverland.

So many of these are starting to withstand the test of time and it's interesting to see what will be brought back next and on what platform it will land.

Many New Titles Appearing in the Wii Shop
Nick Greeley, Tuesday, 25 September 2007

WiiShopChannelRecent weeks have brought us a slew of new classics for the Nintendo Wii.  I've got to say, at this point, the Wii is fast outpacing the Xbox Live stuff we've been seeing lately.

Remember that Nintendo licensed Sega and TurboGrafx 16 games as well as has been porting over NES games on a regular basis.

Recent titles include:

NES Play Action Football, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Neutopia II

Yoshi's Story, Super Thunder Blade and World Class Baseball

Adventure Island and Donkey Kong Jr. Math

Metal Slug 7 Exclusive to DS
Nick Greeley, Tuesday, 25 September 2007

MetalSlug7 Fresh from the TGS07 (Tokyo Game Show 07) comes news that Metal Slug 7 will be released for the Nintendo DS, and apparently, only the Nintendo DS.

The fellas over at Kotaku are giving us some first impressions of the game.  While the impressions aren't that impressive, there is still time in the development, so hopefully things will improved.

Supposedly, SNK Playmore is making use of the dual screens by devoting an entire screen to a map of the level which gets revealed as you play the level.

Screenshots from around the web show your standard Metal Slug type graphics and play with what looks like very little new about the latest version in this series.  Die Hards are going to quickly jump on it, but I have to agree with other comments to the effect that for version 7, one would expect things to be improved in some regard.

More screenshots can be seen here.

New Product: Micro-Leaf™ Arcade Pushbutton Switches
Nick Greeley, Tuesday, 25 September 2007

RandyT of GroovyGameGear made the following announcement on the BYOAC forums recently:

Available shortly from www.groovygamegear.com

Here's yet another GroovyGameGear Innovation!  The Micro-Leaf™ Arcade Pushbutton Switch.  The only pushbutton switch to combine the best traits of both the classic leaf-style switch and the modern micro or "snap" switches.  The Micro-Leaf gets rid of the loud clicking. Much like a leaf switch, it's virtually inaudible when installed in a panel and the actuation can't be felt at all.  Actuation is fast and reset travel is tiny, making ultra-fast cycling a reality for the first time ever in a microswitch based arcade pushbutton.  Even the replacement of only the primary fire button switches on your panel with Micro-Leafs will make those rapid-fire games more enjoyable.

New Games for Dreamcast in 2008
Nick Greeley, Tuesday, 25 September 2007

Sega Dreamcast

It's the system that won't die.

It hangs on by a thread, and continues to deliver new titles, albeit few and far between, and just when you thought you'd go ahead and put that Dreamcast in the closet, or up on a pedestal, the guys over at SegaNerds are telling us that 2 new games have been announced for the Dreamcast in 2008.

First up, Dalforce, from RedSpotGames, another vertical shooter. SegaNerds tells us Dalforce is set to contain 11 levels, a 4-player mode, and a unique scoring system.

Second up for 2008, Wind and Water Puzzle Battles, a four player puzzle game with unique characters for the Dreamcast and is a port of a GPX32 title being developed by

An Epiphany, an End, and a Beginning.
Kevin Steele, Saturday, 01 September 2007

I'm afraid I've got some bad news for everyone who's visited RetroBlast: after slaving over the site overhaul, sinking money into it, and getting close to opening RetroBlast back up...I realized something: I don't want to re-open RetroBlast — I really, really don't want to.

The site has been such a burden on me since I took over GameRoom magazine a year and a half ago, and I've been so busy running a business that RetroBlast has withered into a mere shell of what it once was.
