Speedball II: Brutal Deluxe Returns
Joe Allen, Saturday, 20 October 2007

Speedball II

Add yet another cool retro title to the Xbox LIVE Arcade. Empire Interactive has announced the addition of a new version of the Amiga and Sega Genesis classic Speedball II: Brutal Deluxe to the online arcade service.

Originally released in 1991, Speedball II mixes soccer, hockey and handball into a futuristic sport that was the inspiration for other cool alt-sports titles on the Sega Genesis like Mutant League Football and Baseball.

According the press release from Empire Interactive, the Xbox LIVE version contains more teams than the original, as well as a high definition 3-D version and downloadable content.

If anyone has had a chance to pick up this title on the 360, we'd love to get some opinions from our fellow retro gamers.

RetroBlast! - Not Dead Yet
Paul Murphy, Friday, 19 October 2007

In a move some might say more foolish than bold, RetroBlast frontman Kevin Steele is handing over the keys to the RetroBlast.com website to a bunch of slack-jawed good for nothing punk kids. This will allow Kevin to continue to focus on the mammoth amount of work that he has been putting into GameRoom Magazine .
Don't worry Kev, we'll take good care of her!

Kevin has been kind enough to let us publish the full archive of his original RetroBlast content (articles, reviews, videos and all) and evolve the site to meet the needs of home gaming enthusiasts everywhere. We plan to continue bringing you news and reviews of the major happenings in the retro-gaming community and more.

First on our to-do list is to get all that irreplaceable RetroBlast goodness transferred onto this new website; this is accessible in the Articles/Reviews menu. Also in the works is a complete Buyers Guide to all the game-room paraphernalia currently available from the major suppliers. The site might be a little rough around the edges while we settle in, so if you see something that appears out of place or have any suggestions, please let us know in the new Forum .

While we've been setting up Nick and a few others have been busy hunting down and submitting new news stories; so straight away visitors such as yourself have some juicy pieces of retro-gaming news that you might have missed during the RetroBlast hiatus.

Keep your eyes on this spot; RetroBlast ain't dead yet - we've only just begun.

Nintendo Announces NES Support End Date
Nick Greeley, Friday, 19 October 2007

NESRetroBlast! Contributor Ed pointed this out via Arcade Renaissance , Nintendo has announced the end of support for everybody's favorite little console, the Nintendo Entertainment System as of October 31, 2007.

I was too poor to own an Atari when it came out and had to go down the street to the neighbors house to play, so for me, the Nintendo was the first console that I personally owned.

That year, it was released with Robbie the Robot and all of maybe 10 minutes was spent playing with that darn robot before it sat on the shelf collecting dust because of the confounded difficulty associated with it.

Needless to say, we're all in luck, as Nintendo has commited to continuing to release titles for the Wii Virtual Console for NES, SNES and Nintendo 64.

Bob Ostertag's w00t
Nick Greeley, Wednesday, 17 October 2007

w00t Time to make room on the iPod.  There's some new music in town that's sure to spark some imagination and memories from you.

Billed as "composed entirely from fragments of music from these computer games:

Balloon Fight • Congo Bongo • Contra • Earthbound • Halo: Combat Evolved • Ico • Katamari Damacy • Killer Instinct • The Legend of Zelda • Massive Assault • Myst • Star Fox • Super Metroid • Super Smash Bros.: Melee • Viewtiful Joe • WarioWare, Inc: Mega Party Game$ • World of Warcraft"

I've got to say, this is definitely a unique piece of music that would do well as ambient music in your game room, or if you're looking to really geek out and take a trip back to your favorite games, this will do it.

Kudo's to RetroBlast! Contributor Sez for tossing this little gem our way.

Lighter Side: AAA, The God of Video Games
Nick Greeley, Tuesday, 16 October 2007

AAAHiScore On a lighter note, RetroBlast! Contributor Sez has brought to us this little gem of a wiki proclaiming AAA The God of All Video Games !

The wiki describes AAA as "Known only by the three initials he uses on arcade high score lists, he has left his ubiquitous mark in the RAM chips of countless motherboards. He both owns and has played every single video game in the universe, including the superintelligent ones developed by the Pentagon that suck you into a Tron-like cyberspace where you fight to the death against the CPU itself. He has killed approximately 12 video game CPUs in this fashion."

If you're looking for a lighter side of things, be sure to check out some of the other descriptions of the other video games listed as well.

For example, did you know "The Galaga Machine was developed in Star Century 0079 by the last surviving humans who hid from the tyranny of thier alien rulers."

Check out more of the Uncyclopedia here.

Home Built - Guitar Hero Cabinet
Nick Greeley, Monday, 15 October 2007

GHCabinet Here's something you don't see everyday!

BYOAC regular Knievel has unveiled his latest design.  A Guitar Hero Cabinet built to replicate a monster stack of Marshall amps.

For those of you unfamiliar with Guitar Hero, where have you been?  Kidding.  The appeal of Guitar Hero for many of us retro-gamers is the draw of being able to play guitar to some of the greatest rock n' roll hits of the last 3 decades including many hits from the 80's.

Knievel's work is well known over at BYOAC and he continues to put out quality projects inovating and coming up with new ways to play while remaining stylish and space conscious.

According to Knievel, the cabinet is actually 3 boxes stacked together and able to be taken apart to transport to other party spots.  All parts were purchased at an online amp store.

Check it out!

Portland Lounge - Atari Tournaments
Nick Greeley, Monday, 15 October 2007

AtariTourneyCurses!  Foiled again!  In another one of those, "that's my idea!" moments comes a story out of Portland about a couple of 30-something hipster geeks having weekly classic-gaming tournaments at a local lounge.

The story goes on to talk about how classic games hold more challenge over today's more modern games because of things like not being able to pause.  "If you pause you die."

I like this concept.  Somebody needs to start a league that travels around to various bars and nightclubs holding classic gaming tournaments.

It just goes to show that even the classics still have a place in our society beyond us collectors who fawn over the hard to find game cartridge or mint condition Atari.
