Xbox Live Turns 5: Classic Xbox Downloads Coming
Nick Greeley, Wednesday, 14 November 2007

XboxLiveBirthdayXbox Live turns 5 years old this month, and as part of the festivities, Microsoft has announced that several Classic Xbox Games will be available for download starting at 1200 points.

Wait.  What?  When did the original Xbox become Classic?!?! What does that make my beloved Nintendo or the coveted Atari 2600!?!?  Ancient?!?

Anyhow, the gang over at gamerblog had this to say: " First, we're celebrating our anniversary by providing one of my absolute favorite Arcade titles Carcassonne (Hexic 2 in Korea) for free from November 15th at 12:01am PST to November 16th at 11:59 PST. Secondly, we have announced that beginning December 4th, selected original Xbox games will be available for only 1200 points as part of the LIVE update. Some of the first games that will be available are Halo®, Psychonauts™, Crimson Skies®: High Road to Revenge™ and Fable®. And finally, those of you that have been on LIVE with us since 2002 will see 500 MS points credited to your accounts."

Hey a freebie's a freebie so at the very minimum be sure to grab your copy of Carcassonne tomorrow!

Arcades Still Profitable for Capcom
Nick Greeley, Wednesday, 14 November 2007

capcom Well who have thought.  Bloomberg Asia has a story reporting that Capcom "may boost profitability to a seven-year high by the end of March 2009, helped by earnings from its arcade operations, President Haruhiro Tsujimoto said."

This is great news considering that the decline on arcades in the majority of the world has left a dark hole for us retro-gamers who loved going to the arcade just as much as playing the actual games.

Given that we 30-somethings seem to be the driving force behind much of the retro-gaming comeback, you'd think these large companies would be looking to capitalize on that by way of venues that we can take our families too.

Street Fighter Guru Helping Capcom on HD Version
Nick Greeley, Wednesday, 14 November 2007

StreetFighterHDArs Technica is reporting that "world-renowned Street Fighter tournament player David Sirlin has posted a long description of what the company has done to tweak the controls of Super Street Fighter II for the HD Remix in order to make the game more responsive and more accessible.

Sirlin's long post details the company's decision to revamp the control system. The design goals behind this decision are fairly straightforward: Capcom wants the game to be "easier to play—more inclusive rather than exclusive" and "more balanced for tournament play."

With all the work going into this, I certainly hope we're not disappointed.  Of course how can you go wrong playing Street Fighter on a 50" HDTV?

Deal? Big Lots Selling Full Size Uprights for $249
Nick Greeley, Wednesday, 14 November 2007

BigLotsAd The gang over at AtariAge forums gave a heads up that Big Lots is now selling the Konami Full Size Arcade Machines and reportedly the Midway Full Size Upright as well.

I know, I know.  You purists are going to curse the ground that this thing sits on, but I say to you, if it is a means to continue paying homage to the classics of our youth, where's the harm in that?

And $250 may not be the best price for this thing, but you could always go through, and upgrade the components and throw in a larger monitor and you're good to go.

Oh, and, um, full size now is a whole 62" tall so be sure to have some Motrin handy for those tall folk that might be playing over Thanksgiving holiday.

YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary)

And your cost may as well if you decide to start upgrading parts.

Game Center CX First Impressions
Nick Greeley, Wednesday, 14 November 2007

GameCenterCX Wired has a first impressions rundown of the new Nintendo DS title GameCenter CX .

I've not been privy to the show GameCenter CX, but this game, as the show does, pays homage to the mid-80's video gaming craze.

Wired breaks it down like this:

"The premise is simple: Arino, the comedian who stars in the popular TV show, gets fed up with his constant diet of retro games and turns into an evil wizard, who curses you to go back in time and live as a child of the 80's again -- unless you complete his challenges on a series of retro games that look and feel like, but are not, the real thing.

The game opens up with you and your pal in the family room (your pal is the child-version of Arino, who can't believe that he grows up to be an evil old man), with little to entertain you but a Famicom and a copy of Cosmic Gate, a Galaga-inspired shooter. If you want, you can pop the game in the system and just start playing, but Arino starts assigning you challenge after challenge. Clear Stage 5. Use the "warp gates" twice. Blow up a giant asteroid. Get 200,000 points."

Virtual Reality - Real Exercise
Nick Greeley, Wednesday, 14 November 2007

InteractiveFitnessThe Chicago Tribune recently published a story about a local gym that has created an interactive fitness zone to get kids who are sedintary up and moving by combining the video gaming experience with exercise.

The article goes on to describe the lure that gym owners are hoping to create to get kids moving again. So, I started doing a little poking around and sure enough, there's all kinds of companies already geared up for this industry with some very interesting products.

One of the front-runners appears to be Motion Fitness offering products from companies such as Sportwall , who, by the way, have an full line of interactive games ranging from DDR type pads to the interactive SportWall itself.

These just might be the future of arcade gaming folks.

More Atari Evolved Goodness
Nick Greeley, Wednesday, 14 November 2007

AtariEvolvedIGN has posted the 3rd part of a series entitled The Games of Atari Classics Evolved.

This week, they run down Pong, Warlords and Lunar Lander.  I've gotta tell you, this is one of my most anticipated compilations of the year and I can't wait for this thing to hit the streets.

Not only are the original versions included, but each version has an all new updated game to play.  And judging by the screenshots we've seen so far, these things are going to be a Blast! and bring back lots of good memories.

Tron Stick Replacements - Spring 2008?
Nick Greeley, Wednesday, 14 November 2007

TronSticksArcadecontrols.com front man Saint has a news posting up that the owner of Specialty Plastic Reproductions is going to make an attempt to start reproducing in the Spring of 2008 again.

As seen on Arcadecontrols.com: "Pass this along. I have been extremely busy with family house renovations and such. I still have all my equipment and is my full intent to ramp up production of many old needed parts as well as Tron handles. I thank you much for your interest. I am sorry I could not be around when you all needed me but family must come first. I am thinking late spring of 08 I will have my house done and the shop cleaned up and ready to go."

So now you know, and you can plan accordingly.  Try not to e-mail the guy and ask him if he's ready!  We don't want to scare him off before he's even begun.
