Looking for something to spruce up that broken down old couch you've got sitting in the game room? Has the wife commented lately how "blah" your game room is decorated? Have we got just the ticket for you!
Check out these custom made pillows by Etsy artist Rapunzel's Tower (Punzie). This set, as seen on technabob has the cool feature of being able to flip them over and have all the ghosts turn blue as if Pac-Man just swallowed a Power Pill. The set will run you $90 and unfortunately has already been spoken for, but I would guess with a little persuasion, you might be able to get Punzie to make you a set. Punzie also has a knack for other classic gaming creations including Link, Megaman and even the occasional Space Invader. You can check out all of Punzie's creations on Flickr . (0) Comments |

Perhaps one of the most defining moments of 2007 in regard to retro gaming came with the release of The King of Kong; A Fistful of Quarters telling the story of Billy Mitchell vs. Steve Weibe and their "epic" battle for high-score king of Donkey Kong.
The movie did the Retro Gaming community a great justice by bringing back into the spotlight a sometimes forgotten era of gaming and identifying the period's importance in the history of video games and where we are today. On January 29th, you can own your own copy of King Of Kong with prices starting right around $20 via Amazon.com. If you've not seen the movie, it's definitely worth watching, and certainly will inspire you to run out and find a Donkey Kong machine and try and shoot for that high-score yourself. (0) Comments |

If you're bored sitting at the bus stop and haven't quite taken the plung into the 20th century with a mobile device that not only takes phone calls, tells you when your next dentist appointment is and checks the air in your tires, perhaps the Space Invaders Keychain is the right anecdote for you.
For around $15 US, you can make a feeble attempt at reliving the glory days of shoving quarters into that Space Invaders upright at the local pizza parlor Friday night after Friday night. Remember: To avoid the aliens, move left or right. Space Invaders Keychain (0) Comments |

United Coders , the developers of the Nintendo DS port of the classic game Dragon's Lair are on the hunt for a publisher that can back a PSP version of the game by the end of 2008.
Got a little extra cash sitting around that you were looking to invest and wanted it to be in a classic game in the gaming industry? Well here's your chance! "The Sony PSP version of the game will be similar to the Nintendo DS version of the game in that it will feature a choice of two gameplay modes: the classic 1983 arcade version of Dragon's Lair, or a director's cut version featuring an extra scene, an indicator of player progress, more video footage, and more logical scene sequencing." Being a PSP fanboy, I've not had the opportunity to check out the Nintendo DS port of the game, but if any of you have, let us know what you think. (0) Comments |

Start out with a left over piece of MDF already routed for another project who's ultimate design was changed, grab a laptop and some paper mache and you get an Asteroid Shaped Arcade Cabinet capable of playing about 16 or so games.
BYOAC regular dmworking247 is the brains behind this extremely unique looking and functional cabinet. In his thread, he described the project as "An "Asteroid" rock made out of paper mache and painted with two types of 'stone effect' spraypaint, hosting a stripped down laptop/LCD with a 5 button configuration (left/right games only).
It also features function buttons (power, credit, p1 start, p2 start (which I might change to a pause key), and ESC), can be run on the laptop battery, and weighs a less than 5kg (tbc)." I'm not a MAMEY judge, nor do I play one on TV, but it would seem to me that this is definitely worth honorable mention in the cabinet category. (0) Comments |

Via Technabob:
"Back in 1983, designer Rob Marquardt (aka ’someToast’) painstakingly drafted not only the exterior of the stick to show off his mad isometric drawing skills, he went through the trouble of diagramming out all of the gory internals of the classic digital gaming controller." Pretty cool stuff. It just goes to show the times that this was done where pop-culture video games were defining everyday life from what we did in high school to what we wore, watched, and played. In the spirit of Best Of lists, Racketboy has posted their own, with a twist. This time focusing on The Best Old-School Games of 2007.
Of noteable mention are, of course, Pac-Man Championship Edition for the Xbox 360, Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles for the PSP, Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the DS and a few others that I've not even heard of. Now, before you accuse me of living under a rock, (it's actually a cardboard box with highspeed internet connection), I have to argue that Odin Sphere (PS2) doesn't ring any bells as being a hotly discussed game of 2007. Nor does Sin and Punishment (Wii) for that matter, but that doesn't mean much since there's so much news these days, it's tough to keep up with. The famed Metal Slug 3 hits Xbox Live today at 9:00 a.m. GMT.
Xboxer.tv is reporting on some of the achievements, which, from the sounds of it are going to be next to impossible to actually get as they are set to "Maximum Pain." They're also reporting that the game will be multiplayer: "Co-op multiplayer over Xbox Live will make Metal Slug 3 a must for arcade blaster fans with at least one friend - and a Definite Buy even at a slightly top-heavy 800 Microsoft Cash Units." I agree, for 800 points, this is definitely worth it if you can hook up for a co-op over the wire. More info on the achievements: "With challenges like "Complete any mission without getting any power-up items" doing the game without continuing (actually impossible) and beating levels without dying once, it's going to be one awesome test of gaming powers to get the full 200 points." Continuing on with retro games on alternative platforms, IGN posted a story yesterday that Bomberman is now available via the iTunes store for your iPod.
I'm torn by the idea that so many devices built for specific purposes these days are branching out into multi-purpose realms. For example, the iPod is a solid music device and does video well as well, but was not originally designed for gaming purposes, although it was hacked early on to be able to do so. It leads one to wonder just how enjoyable these ports can be with limited controls. If any of you happen to have an iPod and want to review the games that are available as well as their playability, please don't hesitate to contact us. IGN: Bomberman On iPod Now (0) Comments |

Be sure to head over to RetroRemakes and check out their 2007 Awards.
oddbob of RR fame started off the article with this comment: "Hello, lords, ladies and gentlemen - every year we sit down at Remakes Towers, pull up a chair and mutter between ourselves. It’s become a bit of a ritual to mull over whether or not we should actually do a “Best Of Year” post or not. Usually, as you may notice by the fact that prior to this best of there have been none, we decide against it." 2007 Retro Remaks Awards (0) Comments |
