Business Week ArcadeSo there I am, surfing Business Week filling my head with all the doom and gloom of the business world and trying to decide if I want to sell my stock in that company that manufacturers bulletproof vests for cats and what should I spot out of the corner of my eye but the Business Week Arcade!

Yessssss!

Now I can get the latest economic forecast and while pretending to read the article about top 10 trends CIOs should avoid I can get my game on!

Quite the interesting compilation of games including flOw,  LineGolfer and let's not forget Space Barnacle.

Classic Consoles Become Guitars
Nick Greeley, Wednesday, 26 March 2008

At first I was disappointed at the fact that a classic console would be destroyed, but then I thought about all those consoles that have made it to landfills only to sit and rot in their own plasticized goodness for another million years and I realized that repurposing a classic console into a musical instrument is a great idea!

TechEBlog has a great compendium of various consoles that have been turned into functional guitars.

Which then led me to MegaDriver. Be sure to check out the MP3s and the Sonic Guitar.

Let's not forget the NES Paul and just for some video goodness, check out this video of the Mega Driver in action:

Atari Pong Trophy Up For Auction
Nick Greeley, Tuesday, 25 March 2008

Pong TrophyHere's a unique piece of history.  According to the Ebay Seller , this trophy of a Pong Cabinet encased in resin was given to his mother who worked at Atari and won a company Pong Tournament whereby she actually beat Nolan Bushnell.

Now that's some bragging rights right there.  Not only did you work for Atari during it's infancy and the days were able to witness, first hand, the dawning of a new era of electronics and video gaming, but you also played in a company Pong Tournament and took the godfather of console gaming to school and beat him!

Ya know, if that was my mother, I don't think I'd ever give up that trophy.  This kid must have had an awesome childhood frowing up with all the latest Atari stuff all the time.

Check out the auction here. This will look beautiful on any mantle.

Sinistar Meets Dick and Jane
Nick Greeley, Tuesday, 25 March 2008

DickandJane"See Dick Run.
See Jane Run.
Run, Coward, Run.
I Am Sinistar.
I Hunger, Cowards."

That's the tagline that's printed on the full graphic linked by the picture at left.

The gang over at BoingBoing is wondering who might have made this seemingly anonymous, yet educational graphic depicting our favorite couple Dick and Jane running franctically away from the evil Sinistar.

Head on over and have a look at the full graphic and see if you can help figure out who designed it.

Classic 80s Home Video Games Book
Nick Greeley, Thursday, 20 March 2008

80s Game BookA couple of fellas over at AtariAge have put together a coffee table book of sorts for your reading enjoyment.

From one of the authors: "As some of you may recall earlier in the year, Jason Brassard (Trade-N-Games) announced a book here that he and I had been working on. Our hope was to have the book available by Christmas. However, due to a number of issues at the publisher, this was not possible. These issues have now been resolved, and our publisher is putting the finishing touches on our book: Classic 80s Home Video Games. Jason and I expect the book to be in our hands in late February or early March. As soon as we have a firm shipping date, we'll be sure to update everyone here. In the mean time, we are finally ready to begin taking orders. As a thank you for everyone who orders from us, we will be offering free shipping for all United States orders"

$24.95 shipped from here

Thanks to RetroMC for pointing it out.  Looks cool and like something I'd throw on my coffee table, if I had a coffee table.  Well, we do, but it's more like an ottoman for my wife, and the cat, and whatever other junk is on it.  There's really no coffee on it, but I digress.....

The HarmoNESica
Nick Greeley, Wednesday, 19 March 2008

HarmoNESicaNot sure why anyone would want to take and stuff a harmonica into a NES cartridge, but you know, it could be worse.  You could use the cartridge as a CD case, or a doorstop, or to patch a hole in a leaky dam.

According to it's creator: "That's a NES cartridge and a harmonica. I think you know where this is going. This is going exactly where the intersection of nostalgia and commercialism should have gone like ten freaking years ago. I've googled all sorts of combinations like "NES harmonica" and "nintendo harmonica" and "NES cartridge instrument" and I can't find anything like this. Everybody talks about blowing on the game like a harmonica, but as far as I know I'm the first person on the Internet to actually use a harmonica."

USPS Goes Green For Your Old Electronics
Nick Greeley, Wednesday, 19 March 2008

USPSThis is one of those "doing our part to help the rest of the world go green" stories and announcements.

The USPS announced this week that they would be offering Free shipping of old small electronics such as mp3 players, ipods, cellphones, and ink cartidges for those wishing to recycle those products by sending them to Clover, a no-landfill company doing everything in it's power to recycle old electronics without adding waste to landfills.

"The “Mail Back” program helps consumers make more environmentally friendly choices, making it easier for customers to discard used or obsolete small electronics in an environmentally responsible way. Customers use free envelopes found in 1,500 Post Offices to mail back inkjet cartridges, PDAs, Blackberries, digital cameras, iPods and MP3 players – without having to pay for postage."

So if you're like me and have drawers full of old toys that are no longer worth a penny on ebay, maybe this will help with your spring cleaning and help you to feel like you've made the world a little greener and a landfill a little less full.

PSP Cardboard Mini Arcade
Nick Greeley, Wednesday, 19 March 2008

PSP Cardboard ArcadeWhy you ask?  Why not I say!  Yeah, well, ok, I'm sure you DIY'ers out there can probably make these yourself and come up with some much better designs, but still, for those of you who can't draw a perfect circle, let alone design a whole cardboard standup for your PSP, there's these little guys:  Cardboard Mini Arcade

Sure to be nominated the most useless PSP accessories of the year, the vendor describes these as "Flat pack cardboard - fold it yourself mini arcade machine to hold your PSP. Great little replica of an 80's arcade machine with retro graphics, so real they even have graffiti and discarded wrappers inside!!"

Hey, for $12.50, if you've got nothing better to spend it on, grab these and use them to display your PSP when not in use.  Or, if you're so creatively inclined, perhaps you could do something with Paper Arcade models of yesteryear and build one strong enough to hold your PSP.

And don't forget the Cardboard Ghetto Blaster for your Ipod.
