Space Invaders Cutting Board
Nick Greeley, Wednesday, 05 March 2008

Space Invaders Cutting BoardNow here's a guy after my own heart!  A little bit of maple, a little bit of walnut, glue it, sand it, seal it and you've got yourself a really, really cool Space Invaders Cutting Board.

I'm the cook in my house, so I would love to have something like this in the kitchen.  A video game themed kitchen would actually be very cool.  Much cooler than the standard, typical flowers and country kitchen settings that we see all over.  Why not go crazy in your kitchen or living room or whatever?  It's your house right?  If you want Mario hangin' from the ceiling who cares!

Wow, ok, well that might not be the best idea afterall, but still, this guy, Captain Sideburns' craftsmanship is top notch!  He's already planning a Zelda Tri-force and folks are throwing in ideas for Mario etc..

New Dream Arcades Documentary
Nick Greeley, Tuesday, 04 March 2008

Dream ArcadesMike and company of Dream Arcades fame have put together a short documentary detailing how Dream Arcades came to be.

The documentary goes through Mike's layoff from his company the day before his wedding and how Dream Arcades became a reality for he and his wife along with offering some views of Mike's shop and what goes on behind the scenes.

I gotta hand it to Mike, it takes balls, especially in today's economy, to take the leap of faith that he did and start his own business for this industry.  Kudo's to you and yours Mike!

Arcade Games Make a Comeback
Nick Greeley, Tuesday, 04 March 2008

PongMSN has a great bit up this week about Arcade Games making a comeback because of the 30/40 something generations buying up all the old cabinets like hotcakes and restoring them.

This really is no surprise to those of us who follow the hobby.  Much like our fathers and granddads who bought, tinkered with, and restored classic cars, I'd have to say that Arcade Games are very similar to a MOPAR for us.

I think this sums it up best: "These old-school games might not have the best graphics," says videogame industry analyst Billy Pidgeon of IDC. "But the game mechanics are sound, and the game play is a lot better than many of today's new titles. That game play lets the players hold on to their youth."

Check out the article , and while you're at it, be sure to head over to their community area and join in the discussion on which games you would like to see redone for modern systems .

Pinball HoF: The Williams Collection
Nick Greeley, Tuesday, 04 March 2008

Williams PinballGamezone has a nice little blurb about Pinball Hall Of Fame: The Williams Collection being released for Wii, PS2 and PSP last week.  I'm not sure that's entirely accurate as checking another source shows that just the Wii version was released last week, but hey, the others might be out there as well.  Here's what Gamezone had to say:

"Pinball Hall of Fame - The Williams Collection faithfully recreates eight of the most memorable tables from the golden age of pinball in stunning, photorealistic 3D. Working closely with Williams to ensure authenticity of each of the games, the collection is highlighted by some of the most popular and innovative Williams pinball tables, including Gorgar, the first-ever talking pinball machine, Black Knight®, which introduced “Magna-Save(tm)” and Bonus Ball, and Space Shuttle(tm), which took the pinball industry by storm in 1984."

Sounds good to me!

Catfight at Chuck E. Cheese's
Nick Greeley, Tuesday, 04 March 2008
Chuck E. CheeseVia BostonHerald.com: "Two battling Boston moms face the next round in court after police say they turned on each other at a Chuck E. Cheese restaurant.

The fight allegedly broke out at the Natick pizza-and-play eatery during a child’s birthday party, police said.

Natick police said the mom of the 9-year-old birthday boy apparently became enraged because the other woman’s son was "hogging" an arcade game Saturday night."

I guess these mom's forgot to teach their kids the rule about lining up quarters on the machine to play your turn.  I remember vividly lining up my quarters on different machines that I wanted to play all the while staring over the guy in front of me's shoulder and making him nervouse while he was playing a round of whatever game it was.

Space Invaders Extreme 30th Anniversary Bath Towel
Nick Greeley, Wednesday, 27 February 2008

SI Bath TowelYou ready to feel old?  This year marks the 30th anniversary of the classic Space Invaders.  Yep, 30 years!  Holy Space Baddies Batman where has the time gone!

The wiki for SI says: "designed by Tomohiro Nishikado in 1978. It was originally manufactured by Taito and licensed for production in the U.S. by the Midway division of Bally. Initially released in its native Japan in 1978, it ranks as one of the most influential video games ever created."

Most definitely one of the iconic games of the video game revolution.  And as mentioned yesterday, we'll be seeing a Space Invaders Extreme edition released this year for the DS and PSP.  SI Extreme was released this month in Japan and is due out in the states in June 2008.

In the mean time, if you're looking to remind yourself of the 30th anniversary on a daily basis, check out these cool Bath Towels being offered by NCSX on pre-order for about $20 US

I'm sure more than one of you will find yourself humming the Space Invaders march. Dun, dun, dun, dun....

DIY Mario Bar and Drinks
Nick Greeley, Tuesday, 26 February 2008

DIY Mario Themed BarWell, not DIY as in, how to build your own Mario bar, but DIY as in how to take your bar and decorate it in a Mario-like Theme and offer several different foo-foo drinks with Mario-like names. For Example:

Bowser

Fiery red-yellow gradient drink... with some bite!

2 cl Tequila
1 cl Coin-treau
5 cl Orange juice
1 cl Grenadine

Directions:
Stir first three ingredients, then drop in Grenadine for the gradient effect. Serve with ice in tall glass.

Sounds and looks to me an awful lot like a Tequila Sunrise, but still, the idea remains, if you're looking for a retro-gaming theme for your next get together, this is a great way to do it.

Scrollbar even offers some custom made paper stencils to help decorate your bar area and give that Mario World feel.  Pretty cool idea if you ask me.

It's-a-me! Mario Bar!

Space Invaders Extreme Preview
Nick Greeley, Tuesday, 26 February 2008

SI ExtremeIGN has a preview this week of the latest addition to the Space Invaders legacy.  Space Invaders Extreme for the Nintendo DS is due to be released any time now.

IGN's got some great screen shots of it and a video of the game play.  It's definitely fast paced and has a TON of new features, but keeps it real with the Space Invaders theme of keeping your ship on the bottom while you scroll side to side trying to kill the space baddies.

The video shows that the background is constantly shifting making it definitely feel like a very busy game with lots of action going on and plenty of distractions to take you off your game.

That being said, it looks very impressive with the new powers ups, while all the while staying true to its roots.
