Not only did John come up with a unique theme for an arcade cabinet, but he also went the extra mile literally "sculpting" custom pieces for his build.
In a move some might say more foolish than bold, RetroBlast frontman Kevin Steele is handing over the keys to the RetroBlast.com website to a bunch of slack-jawed ...
"The limited edition Console Wars Veteran I medal honors “the memories of endless epic battles, infinite high scores and numerous blistered fingers.” The metal badge features a retro NES controller, but we’re hoping other consoles will get the medal treatment soon, as we’d love a SNES version. Available for approx. $27 USD"
Because, you know, we can't brag enough about how we beat that video game at 1 in the morning with no-one around to really witness us beating the final boss.
MSN UK has a nice little run down of the "demise" of the joystick over time. I guess the author doesn't really know about the increased following of retro gamers who are buying and building their own controllers to interface with new gaming systems to get that old school feeling back again.
I mean, honestly, there's just nothing like playing a round of Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter on a good old fashioned joystick with the right amount of properly arranged buttons.
You just can't pull off Ryu's super move properly on a gamepad, nor is it as elegant to here Scorpion yell "Get Over Here!" when you've completed the move via a gamepad.
You're looking at $2800 U.S. worth of steel, plywood and a nice laminate finish gang that's capable of playing 48 games in total.
Nope, that's not a type-o. 48 games is all, which leads me to believe it's got a Jamma 48-in-1 board in it.
Coolhunter.net is selling these bad boys in your choice of color combinations to fit any decor you might have, or that your wife wants you to match as part of an agreement to bring an arcade cabinet into your home.
If it were me, I'd open up a happy-hour bar, loaded with nothing but cocktail tables and let everybody get their groove on to 80's music while playing their favorite childhood games.
Reuters is reporting that Namco has announced the closing of as many as 60 of its arcades in the coming months.
"In a shock downward revision to its earnings outlook, toy and amusement arcade firm Namco Bandai Holdings said it would close between 50 and 60, or roughly one-fifth of its arcades, causing its shares to plummet for a second consecutive session on Thursday.
"A lot of the types of games that people played at an arcade can now be done at home," company spokesman Yuji Machida said.
The Wii, which has gained worldwide popularity, offers an innovative motion-sensing controller that can be swung like a bat or sword. The addition of "Wii Fit", which features a pressure sensing board that players can use to simulate ski jumps or surfing, has also propelled sales."
Definitely a sign of the times kids. Sega announced last week that it would close between 80-100 arcades itself.
"Kotakuite the-hypnotoad toiled for months on this truly incredible 16 bit Samus painting. It is approximately three feet tall and stands watch over his desk. I've seen quite a few pixel paintings in my time and none of them comes even close to this. No decals here folk, that's all hand painted."
Very cool work! Someday I hope to have the skillz, no wait, I mean the time, or maybe it's just the ambition to actually sit down and create something as dramatic.
The artwork that we're seeing today really is coming into it's own. Pop culture has always been an inspiration for art, but to take 20+ year old fads and bring them back into a new era really does show the test of time that video games have endured and their lasting affect on our culture.
Jimi's got some beautiful prints displayed of both Mario and Link and while these are less creapy than some of the previous artwork created for I-am-8-bit, they're still anough off center to cause one to be slightly creaped out by their appearance.
Still, applause must go out to Jimi for his rendition of Mario, marrying classic 8-bit pixelation with modern textures, he's created a truly unique piece of art.
I gotta ask though, why does Link look like he's had a few?
So I'm really hoping. No really, I mean really hoping that this is all a result of the writers strike and this project will now go back into hiding now that a tentative agreement has been reached.
Anyhow, Moviehole.net has a story this morning talking with the new director of the an announced 3rd installment of Mortal Kombat:
"The status of the film, as of today, is that “...the Producers are working out their deals with the studio and arranging their financing”, says the director, who helmed Steven Seagal's “Into the Sun”."
IMDB is reporting a 2010 release date and shows Christopher Lambert returning as Rayden. Let us hope it's better than the last.
If you've not seen Peter Hirschberg's homage to Retro Gaming built right outside his house, I encourage you to have a drool, erm...I mean look.
You can catch a quick glimpse of it over at Gizmodo along with an interview of Peter talking about his new little Mecca that he can get up in the morning and stroll across the driveway to.
I don't know how you did it Peter, and I don't know where you found the money to do it, but I tip my hat to you and your magnificent creation. You sir, have something that most of us can only dream of. Makes me want to run down and buy another lottery ticket right now!
Also, keep an eye out for an upcoming interview of Peter in Gameroom mag.
Andy's at it again. This time showing off an as-yet un-named new trackball designed for "easy mounting."
And to top it off, he's looking for suggestions on what the name should be and offereing a prize for the name is picked!
From his posting: "Lets face it, nobody likes trackball mounting plates! Nor the effort in crafting a panel which does not need one, with a conventional trackball. Well soon they will be banished to history!"
Hopefully we'll be able to talk Andy into letting us review a unit and give you the full skinny on this new trackball. Speaking of reviews, we really need to get that trackball roundup going so you guys have something to discuss and yell at us about!
Just a heads up for those of you in the Orlando, FL area. This coming Saturday, February 9th, Super Auctions in cooperation with Birmingham Vending will be auctioning off close to 400 units as part of an effort to clear inventory prior to their move to a new location.
You never know, there could be some good deals to be had with that many units on the block.
